Hi, I'm Natalie, your TinyTalk teacher for North Dorset and South-East Somerset and I deliver Baby Sign and Toddler Talking classes in Sherborne and Henstridge.
I was introduced to baby sign language when my eldest daughter Lucy was 9 months old. I met with friends and I was completely amazed by the ability of their 18month old son to confidently communicate using a huge number of signs. I was astonished and I wanted to see what baby sign could do for us so I enrolled into the next available class and we began our incredible baby sign journey.
I have attended TinyTalk baby sign classes with both my girls (some in person and some online) and although their baby sign journeys have been different, by joining in each week and by working with what interested and motivated them, both girls could make 100 signs at 20months old. We love the fact that the classes are a great mix of familiar nursery rhymes and action songs which has encouraged our girls (and me) to learn a range of important signs in a fun and easy way. When Alice signed ‘home’ for the first time I was left wondering when I had taught it to her but when I mentioned it to our lovely teacher, she reminded me that it had been in a couple of songs that we had been singing recently.
In class we teach baby sign using British Sign Language signs. There so many opportunities to communicate with your baby using only a handful of these signs, be they the signs for specific needs, your family members, animals or activities from your daily routine. For our family (including grandparents) signing with our girls has given us a fantastic insight into their mind and developing character well before they can talk. We have enjoyed many days out and shared books at a new and exciting level with them as they have learnt to sign what they can see and hear. Seeing how excited our girls become when they know that they have been understood when signing is utterly priceless, it is an absolute joy.
Learning baby sign with our girls has helped them to successfully communicate their interests, needs and desires and has dramatically reduced the frustrations with not being understood. The ability to communicate with us in a positive way at a such a young age has helped form an even stronger bond between us as a family and has encouraged the development of good communication.
Baby signing has been such an overwhelmingly positive experience for our family and I am both thrilled and delighted to be bringing TinyTalk classes to the area. Our classes are fun, supportive and educational. We sing, we sign, we play and we chat.
Come and join us!
