Welcome to TinyTalk Nottingham West!
I'm Laura, your TinyTalk Baby Signing & Toddler Talking teacher, running friendly, relaxed classes in Beeston, Wollaton and Toton.
My own TinyTalk journey started as a parent. My son Arthur was born in September 2018, and we joined TinyTalk when he was around six months old after a recommendation from a friend.
As a first-time mum, I found TinyTalk invaluable. It gave me somewhere to meet other parents, enjoy time with Arthur and learn a way to communicate with him before he could say the words himself.
I'll never forget the excitement of seeing his first signs and realising he was actually telling me what he was thinking! One of my favourite memories is taking him to the park and seeing him suddenly become incredibly excited. I couldn't work out why until I realised he was signing BIRD. Being able to understand what had caught his attention was such a special moment.
His favourite sign was always DUCK, which was also one of his first signs! Signing became a really useful part of our everyday life, helping him tell us what he wanted, liked and noticed, while reducing some of the frustration that can come before speech develops.
That experience is a huge part of why I became a TinyTalk teacher. I now have over 6 years' experience supporting families and love seeing other parents experience those same exciting communication milestones.
Baby Signing classes are suitable from birth to around 24 months. We use nursery rhymes and songs to introduce useful everyday BSL signs, followed by a fun sensory activity using things such as bubbles, scarves, instruments, flashing balls and sensory shapes.
Toddler Talking classes are for little ones who are walking through to preschool age. They're active, busy and lots of fun, combining signs and spoken words with songs, movement, games and activities.
There's no pressure for little ones to sit still or join in with everything. Babies can feed, sleep or cuddle when they need to, and toddlers are welcome to explore.
TinyTalk is also about supporting the grown-ups. Every class includes 20–30 minutes of social time, with toys for the children and a hot drink and biscuit for you. It's a chance to chat, make friends and enjoy time with other families – something I found so important when Arthur was little.
