Welcome to the TinyTalk classes of
Deborah Hart

"" Welcome to TinyTalk, Kent Downs. I'm Deb and I first discovered baby signing when my son was about 5 months old. I was keen to do something different with him, and I loved the thought of getting my baby brain back into shape by learning a new skill!
We made a 60 mile round trip each week to attend our nearest TinyTalk class (yes, it was that good!), and before long Nico was starting to pick up the
signs. He first signed back to me at about 9 months, and at his peak used over 70 signs regularly! I really believe it eased the frustrations of being a small toddler; we were able to communicate long before he could talk.
When my daughter was born I naturally signed with her right from the start - it's completely amazing when your tiny child tells you they've heard a noise, or seen an aeroplane or need a drink! Come and join in the fun at my classes! We sing familiar nursery rhymes, songs and stories and sign along to them, learning 150 signs to use at home as part of daily life. And there's some social time too for babies to play and interract and for us grown-ups to have a cuppa - how civilised! I look forward to meeting you and your little one soon...

Meet Deborah...

Children:Nico, aged 9 and Lilou who's 7.

Location:Kent

Favourite Sign:Sorry (my son still uses this when he's genuinely sorry!)

Qualifications:Modern languages and music..

Favourite Film:Inception, The Greatest Showman or the Lord of the Rings Triology.

Pet Hate:Mm...bad spelling, laziness, dog mess, bigotry, having no storage, car exhaust...the list goes on!

Secret Passion:Books. I'd love to do away with our TV and make more time for reading.

I most admire:Mums who battle against the odds to do the very best by their children.

I love baby signing because:It gives families a chance to learn what their baby is thinking - how amazing is that! I remember the first time my son told me he'd heard a noise in the garden and it was a bird! He was 13 months!

Meet my Mini Teacher, Lauren Gupta-Miles

Hi, I’m Lauren.

I joined one of Deb’s classes when my daughter was 8 months old- we both loved it- and I knew I wanted to get involved in teaching with TinyTalk.

Signing alongside speech comes naturally to me, having spent the last 10 years working in Early Years Education and focusing on Special Needs teaching in recent years. I found the format of TinyTalk classes familiar and good fun, but what really grabbed me was the enjoyment of sharing in communication with families; seeing parents’ confidence grow and babies’ understanding and excitement. Young babies enjoying a genuine two-way interaction with a parent, long before their speech develops.

My TinyTalker Vedanti’s first signs were: ‘milk’, ‘more’ and ‘duck’. Early on in our baby signing journey, she picked up a rubber duck in the bath and signed ‘duck’ to me. It’s truly exhilarating when you get that first window into their thought process- and they can tell you what they want! At 11 months, she’s beginning to comment on what she sees- and she is definitely reassured by the fact I understand her; it’s great to be able to have a ‘conversation’ with her now.

TinyTalk works- and it’s lots of fun! Come and join us for signing, singing and fabulous sensory activities, all well-matched to key skills in your child’s development.

There’s also time for you: we want to make you a cuppa and get to know you too!
Hope to see you soon
x

Meet my Mini-Teacher, Becky Huckle

Hi, I'm Becky.

I started at Debs' classes in Whitstable when my son was just 10 weeks old and went to Lauren's when I returned to work from maternity leave. I loved the idea of being able to connect and communicate with him before he could speak and the longer we've been involved, the more we've got from signing.

We love the structure of the classes, the variety of activity and the range of signs, which enabled us to pick things up as beginners and then build on them as we became more experienced signers.

My Tiny Talker, Orion, signed 'sock' at 4 months old (the first sign is often not what you'd expect!) and he's now racked up 170 signs at 20 months old. From about 10 months the signs really came thick and fast, with multiple new signs appearing on a daily basis. He would also sign seasonal ones, like strawberry, that we hadn't signed since we last ate them nearly a year before!

I'm eternally staggered by how much babies take in; they are little sponges. They want to communicate with us, they just need access to a shared language and that's why baby signing is so incredible. Signing is something babies can do long before they can talk so it's the perfect thing for parents to do with them.

Toddler frustrations are eased because Orion can tell us what he wants; we can have clear conversations about all kinds of random things that pop into his mind and when he wants to go to the zoo at 5am, he doesn't get to go, but we know what we're dealing with!

The relationship we have with our son is so rich, respectful, fun and full of understanding. Tiny Talk is firmly entwined in how we parent and I love helping other mummies and daddies (and grandparents, etc) deepen their understanding and bond with the babies in their lives.

Becky x
