Welcome to the TinyTalk classes of
Laura Stephenson

"" Hi, I’m Laura 

I’m the Tiny Talk Teacher for South Nottingham and currently have classes running in Gamston, Ruddington and West Bridgford.

I first became aware of baby signing when I had my daughter Connie. We attended the local classes and really enjoyed the wide range of activities on offer. I loved the singing and signing and social time with the other mums (the tea and biscuits didn’t hurt either) and Connie pretty
much loved the whole thing. She especially delighted in the songs with musical instruments (shaking maracas and bells with gusto) and the walk around section of the session when she’d squeal with delight during the Hokey Cokey and at the end of ‘Going on a Bear Hunt’ when we’d all roar and then run away. She’d stare transfixed as our Tiny Talk teacher signed through story books and nursery rhymes and giggled and snorted as she got jiggled around during the chair songs and turned upside down for her favourite ‘all the little ducks go upside down’ song. The sensory activities with bubbles and flashing balls were also popular as were those with the stretchy shiny fabric which often resulted in a comical baby tug of war. It was by far the highlight of our week!

When Connie then began to use the signs (she’d understood them for a while before demonstrating them) we saw the really valuable extra that Tiny Talk classes offered beyond just the fantastic sessions. Connie started to tell me when she wanted her milk!!! It was AMAZING. To not have to struggle to interpret her crying and guess or work my way down the ‘what could be wrong now’ list I’d been relying on was a revelation. I knew exactly what Connie wanted, she had just told me. Soon after Milk and Food, Connie started to add other signs to her vocabulary. She went on a bit of an animal naming spate with Duck, Bird and Cat following in quick succession. Her little face so full of pride when the fluffy Missy cat would stroll into the room and Connie would announce ‘Ca’ and start signing furiously.

So when Claire (our fantastic Tiny Talk Teacher) mentioned she had started to think about moving onto pastures new it really wasn’t a hard decision to take the plunge and become a Tiny Talk Teacher. Having a background in teaching and training it felt like a natural transition. The well planned and thoroughly resourced lesson plans and schemes of work add great value to the enjoyable sessions and helped to confirm I’d made the right decision.

So that’s my story, how I came into contact with Tiny Talk and baby signing before eventually become a Tiny Talk teacher myself. How will your story start?
