  Hi I am Julia Maugham; mum to two children. Daniel and Rebecca. Rebecca is an accomplished TinyTalker and her big brother loves to join in and teach her new baby signs. I baby signed with Rebecca from 7 months old and at her peak she signed 160 words. Speech as taken over now but she still loves to sign with me. I have been teaching TinyTalk Baby Sign Language since September 2007 in Cramlington Northumberland and won the what’s on 4
 little ones award in 2009 for “Most Outstanding Activity or Class Leader”. We were nominated again in 2010 & 2011.
TinyTalk Baby Signing classes are always relaxed, and friendly. The class is structured so there is half an hour learning the signs based on BSL and using them singing well known songs and rhymes and half an hour social time for you to chat, have refreshments and a biscuit while the children play with small toys.
The age at which mums bring their babies to baby sign class is very individual. You can sign with your baby from birth, If a baby sees the signs regularly they can sometimes let you know that they understand them by about 5 months with lots of excited arm waving and toe curling when they see the milk sign. By approximately 6-7 months they can start to sign back, normally when they are able to clap and wave.
I now run popular TinyTalk Toddler classes so you can still enjoy TinyTalk as your baby starts to use words to make themselves understood. TinyTalk Toddler classes aim to encourage and support children's speech and language understanding and expression. The toddler classes are more focused on speech and other skills such as conversational turn taking and social skills. We explore different themes each week and have more physical activities such as parachute songs and language activities.

It was reassuring that I knew what my baby wanted; it helped with the tantrums but most of all it was fun finding out what she thought about. My daughter loved going to classes and I did too. |
